Of Expectations & Reality. And (Un)Realistic Hope!

Reality is such a great leveler. There you are - infatuated and all. While your mind sways to tunes heard only by you, a real-world also exists outside your bubble. And you are made aware of its existence by the most insignificant of things.

So you like a girl. You then find out that she is already dating. Of course. What did you think? And you are still going bonkers. You have no idea what's wrong with your mind! Let me break it down for you. Cricket offers an almost perfect analogy (like it does for every other thing in our country). Not so long ago, when the great Sachin Tendulkar had not retired, time and again there were instances when India was almost out of the game but he was still not out. We might have needed 200 runs and have only 2 wickets left, and Tendulkar might have been batting with Venkatesh Prasad for that matter. But everyone still had hope. That hope defied logic. Till the time he was on the crease, everyone believed magic could happen. Most of the times it didn't. Some of the times, it did! It's pretty much the same in your case. But then there is only one Tendulkar. So, you are pretty much screwed.

During such testing times, conversations through WhatsApp and SMS further add up to the misery. After you send her a text and hit send on your mobile, time starts moving slowly. You wait for her otherwise elusive response eagerly.

Beep Beep. Unlocking your screen in a hurry.

Your expectations are slapped back to nadir when you realize that the message was from Airtel. No, I don't need a top-up recharge. STFU.

Beep Beep Crown It. The anxious wait continues.

Followed by HDFC, FoodPanda, and others.

Eventually, you give up. You order food and use the discount code you received in one of such messages. And then you find out even that doesn't work because it was only for new users. There comes a time when you actually thank telecom providers and other such random entities sending you messages. Because they kill your expectations to such an extent that when she actually responds, it's almost a pleasant surprise.

And don't believe that horoscope guy either. One fine day, you wake up and look at the Sagittarius (or whatever) section of the reading and find out that true love is just around the corner. Just divide the entire human population by twelve. If there were so much love at disposal, the world would be a much better place to live in. So, as I said, you are screwed. FTW.
